Smile at life gains and losses

I came across this story recently. A guy one day learned that a relative living abroad had passed away, leaving him the legacy of a jewelry store worth about tens of millions of dollars. As he was packing up and getting ready to take over, the jewelry store caught a fire and burnt into ashes. He thus instantly lost the inheritance.

Since then, he had been thinking about the incident and regret everything that might have altered the situation. He became depressed. While lamenting his bad luck, his colleagues tried to comfort him. After all, he was living a happy life before knowing about the inheritance. But he couldn’t overcome it and eventually died of depression.

This story reminds of another similar scenario. There are investors who have made over hundreds or tens of millions of profit in the stock market thanks to their investment intelligence. However, they fail to take profit smartly and end up losing all or even becoming heavy in debt. Many go through regrets, pain and depression as well.

Whether it is a fire incident or a human error of not taking profit in time, both cause the loss of benefits. Disasters cannot be altered, but human error can be corrected if chance permits. However, the best solution might still be belittling life gains and losses.

Life is short being decades of time. How to live it to the fullest and smile at life gains and losses? Everyone have their own answers. Everything material in our life is a gift and it shouldn’t hurt too much to lose it. If we indeed aspire to it, go and get it again. If we feel like our time can be spent in a wiser way, go for it. Don’t be obsessed with what we have and what we have lost. Coming to this world without a penny, we shouldn’t be afraid of leaving exactly how we came.
